Congratulations to Janelle Skeard – Aldrich Fellowship Recipient

Janelle Skeard has been awarded the prestigious F.A. Aldrich Fellowship by the School of Graduate Studies, Memorial University.  Janelle is starting her MA programme in the Geography Department this Fall.  The Aldrich fellowship recognizes the role that Dr Fred Adlrich played in supporting graduate studies at Memorial University.  He began his career in 1961 at Memorial University in the Department of Biology.  In 1970, Prof Aldrich was appointed as the first Dean of the Memorial’s new School of Graduate Studies, and he played a central role in building the School, which continues to support graduate students across the university.

The Aldrich Fellowship is not Janelle’s first award – she has an outstanding record of securing prestigious scholarships.  She is the recipient of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Joseph-Armand Bomadier scholarship for her MA programme.  As an undergraduate student, Janelle received the Heaslip Scholarship. The Heaslip is the largest scholarship open to undergraduate students at Memorial.

She is supervised by Arn Keeling and Kelly Vodden and will be researching the links between identity, governance and resilience in the former mining town of Buchans, Newfoundland.
