New Article on Collaboration Gaps in Rural Tourism Networks

Rural Resilience researchers have recently been published in an article that examines collaboration practices and gaps in rural tourism networks. Dr. Kelly Vodden, Brennan Lowery, and Leanna Butters are co-authors in a paper published in the Journal of Sustainable Tourism. Titled “Collaboration gaps and regional tourism networks in rural coastal communities”, the article examines whether rural tourism operators and support organizations practice collaboration to support tourism development in their regions. The article’s primary author, Dr. Mark Stoddart of the Department of Sociology at Memorial University, received funding support from the Harris Centre’s Applied Research Fund to support the research team in carrying out the study. The study conducted a survey and focus groups in four regions of Newfoundland and Labrador: the Burin Peninsula, Gros Morne National Park, the Tip of the Great Northern Peninsula, and the Labrador Straits. The study revealed a number of gaps between how tourism actors in these regions perceive the value of collaboration and how much they actually collaborate with one another and at provincial, national, and international scales.
