Research Published On Identifying a Fly-in/Fly-out Source-Hub Community
Leanna Butters, a graduate of the M.A. in Environmental Policy program, recently published an article in The Extractive Industries and Society. The article, titled “Identifying a fly-in/fly-out source-hub community: The case of Deer Lake, Newfoundland and Labrador”, shares findings from her M.A. work which was conducted collaboratively with the Town of Deer Lake.
Leanna’s research identifies Deer Lake as a source-hub community, a community type linked to fly-in/fly-out (FIFO) employment operations. Previously, in-depth studies of source-hub communities had only been conducted in Australia. This study provides insight into how source-hub communities have developed in Newfoundland and Labrador and the types of impacts they may experience, especially built space change. Her recent article traces the development of Deer Lake as a source-hub community and identifies factors that influenced its emergence as a natural hub.
