Coastal Connections: Empowering the future – women and youth in fisheries

Rural resilience researcher, Dr. Sondra Eger hosts another episode of Coastal Routes Radio, a radio program made up of an international collaboration of communities, scholars, activists, and others who are dedicated to supporting the health, resilience, and sustainability of coastal communities around the world. In this episode, Dr. Eger cohosts with Dr. Sarah Harper, a colleague from the SSRCH-funded OceanCanada Partnership. Dr. Harper has worked on the human dimension of ocean and marine systems, with a particular focus on equity. Her research has helped bring policy attention to gender inequality across the fisheries sector.

Drs. Eger and Harper are joined by two female leaders and fisherwomen, Erica Porter and Kimberly Orren. Erica Porter is involved in research collaborations with local organizations and universities to help educate communities about the importance of ocean ecosystems. Kimberly is the co-founder of a non-profit, Fishing for Success, dedicated to teaching children and adults the knowledge and skills of the traditional family fishery. Fishing for Success has several programs in place that are working to break down barriers that women face in the fisheries industry. Both of these women are passionate about outreach, education, empowerment, and culture.
